Comments from students

“I found that after I had been learning French for approximately 9 months I was keen to accelerate my progress and enlisted Jean-Marie’s help. I enrolled with him for a weekly lesson for 3 months. I explained to him that I was already studying at the local Alliance Française here in Auckland and that I needed some ‘back up’ assistance. Jean-marie’s style is relaxed and flexible. His philosophy of learning the basics and learning them well provides a sound platform from which to progress in a confident manner. Jean-marie believes in correcting errors as they arise in order to avoid recurring bad habits. This has paid off and he has particularly helped me with my pronunciation to the extent that my improvement has been noted by my Alliance class mates. I know that learning a new language is a long road (with many ups and downs) but I am now more confident than ever that it’s a happening thing for me and I’m definitely into this language for the long haul.

Merci beaucoup Jean-Marie et je suis sûr que nous resterons en contact. Un jour, quand je suis dans le sud de la France je serai sûr de vous regarder“

Tutor:Emma J
Rating:rating (What's this?)
Gender:Female
Location:Wellington - Wellington City
Price Range:$20-30 per hour
Education Level:Graduate/Master Degree
Institute:The University of Auckland
Major:English
Subject:EnglishLevel:Secondary(Form 3-5)
Subject:EnglishLevel:Secondary(Form 6-7)
Subject:Political Studies Level:All levels
Tutoring Experience:
I have tutored secondary English for the past five years. And university English/Politics for the past two. (Also can assist with essay based subjects like Geography and History no problems).

My tutoring sessions are relaxed - I encourage the students to ask plenty of questions and give particular attention to structuring the essay (which is particularly daunting for many students sitting NCEA/CIE level one for the first time).

The same goes for first year English at University which can be a big leap from year 13. I'm happy to help with research, writing, editing and formatting a correct bibliography.

I'm also passionate about extending those students who are looking to improving their Achieved grades to the merit or excellence level. Or from a C or B to an A at University
Description:
I have a genuine love of language and literature and am passionate about motivating students.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any queries - it's amazing what a couple of sessions can do for your confidence - the majority of students I see already have the information but just need a bit of extra help getting in down on the page!

I'm also happy to arrange tutoring via email if the student would like University papers/essays proof-read and re-worked to enhance style and coherency.

I have a BSc in mathematics(with First Class Honours) from Canterbury University, as well as a PhD in mathematics and a minor degree in music from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I taught college maths and tutored violin for six years while I studied in the U.S.A. I have worked in NZ (in various senior analyst roles) for the past nine years, so I have an excellent understanding of how maths and statistics are applied in the real world! I currently work from my home in Tawa with my husband Craig (a piano, music theory and composition tutor) teaching music and mathematics. We have six kids between us (aged between 2 and 12) so we are very patient! Our greatest interest is in motivating school age children, so they not only excel in maths and music, but also learn to love it!
