Over thirty years tutoring at all levels (high school through to graduate level).

Over ten years lecturing in the Department of Physics at the University of Auckland (including supervision of graduate students).
Description:
Telephone: (09) 973-4989.

I went to high school in Auckland and then the University of Auckland where I ultimately completed a PhD in physics. I remained at the University of Auckland for another ten years, lecturing in the Department of Physics. I then left to gain more freedom to pursue my own research. I now continue with that research and work as a private tutor.

I have a reputation for being quiet, modest, and helpful.

I can also teach statistics and electronics. My chemistry and stats are both a little rusty, but I don't charge for any time for which I'm not helpful.

I live near the intersection of Dominion and New North roads, Eden Terrace (so nearby suburbs include: Balmoral, CBD, Central Business District, Epsom, Grafton, Grey Lynn, Kingsland, Morningside, Mount Eden, Newmarket, Newton, Parnell, Ponsonby, Sandringham, Western Springs).

Meetings can be at my home, your home, university, etc.

I have some commitments that change from week-to-week, but, otherwise, I'm available mornings, afternoons, and evenings, all seven days of the week.

Dave is an excellent tutor. Definitely recommended. Dave understands Maths to a very high level and is also able to explain concepts at the level of the student. I'm studying Maths for Business and Dave really helped to apply the concepts to the problem/question.

Dave caters to you specifically as to what you are struggling with/want to learn, but he also promotes structure and discipline. I was struggling, scoring 47.5% on my first assignment, but after working on the foundations of my Math knowledge, it was much easier to understand the new concepts in my last assignment where i earned 92.2%!!

Dave has a good manner and method of teaching. His professional academic background has helped me prepare well for my upcoming exam.

David was my tutor for Maths 102 and Physics 102. David has indepth knowledge and understanding in both Maths and Physics, but more importantly David has the skills to help with any problem.

I am a mature student and this is my first year studying BSc at University of Auckland. In Semester 1, I was faced with many challenges of the new studying environment and the level of learning that is demanded of all students.

I knew from day one that this would be a very challenging semester but it was when I failed my mid semester tests that I turned to look for a tutor. I found David as many students had commented that David is very patient, clear and flexible with his time.

My first session with David, I knew that I had made the right choice. From the very first problem that I attempted to solve in front of David, he was able to pin point exactly what my weaknesses were i.e. missing important steps. Further to this, David was also able to connect these 'mistakes' to my level of understanding on the mathematical concept - which was "I didn't actually understand the mathematical concepts" of that particular problem. So this was the starting point for our tutor sessions.

As I continued to go to David on a weekly basis - my level of understanding improved and so did my performance on these papers.

David is such a great tutor because his passion and understanding of both Maths and Physics is evident in the way that he approaches his role as your tutor: (1) He is patient and works at your pace, he always makes sure that you are confident with each step before moving on to the next step, (2) He is very flexible with his time - David is easy to get a hold of and always tried to make himself available at a time that suited me. David even came out to meet me at one time as I was stressing out before my final exam, (3) He develops your skills - David always makes sure that your level of understanding is developing, he does this by always linking solving problems to understanding the concepts - which I had never done before and I have believe this to be the best skill that I have developed in both Maths and Physics this semester. And I passed my courses!!!!!

I highly recommend David as a tutor, because of these very reasons. He can teach anyone at any level of understanding and he really helps you master the skills not only to successfully complete a problem but to understand so as the problems increase in difficulty - you have the building blocks to increase your ability to solve and understand the problem at a higher level.

Thank you David for all your knowledge and help this Semester!!!! I will be coming back to you for Semester 2 :)

Thanks

Tana

I am a student doing Physics 160 at Auckland University. I have found David Wardle very helpful as a tutor. We are already had 3 sessions and I plan to have more with him as they are of great help and he is very clear and patient with explanations. I would definitely recommend him as a tutor :)

David is an exceptional tutor. He made a lasting first impression on my son and Daniel has asked for David as a tutor often ever since. David helped my son's AS Maths grades improve significantly focussing on Combinations and Permutations. Daniel has remarked on David's thorough teaching style and emphasis on conceptualizing the maths techniques and strategies needed to solve a problem. By looking at the concepts involved Daniel says it makes difficult extensions of a problem immensely easier as the theory behind the problem is made clear. Daniel has also remarked on David's kind and thoughtful nature which makes Daniel feel that David is genuinely trying completely in aiding Daniel to a top maths grade.

Would definitely recommend!

David is my tutor for Physics 150 and Maths 208 (@ A.U). He has a great knack for explaining problems which I can relate to, he is very patient and easy going. I don't feel pressured at all he's very supportive.
I'm finding my confidence increasing after every session and look forward to our meetings each week.

Dr.David helped me with ( first year Biophysics, General and Organic Chemistry, and Statistics )
The number of time we met was 2 days per a week from 2 to 4 hours a day.
Dr.David, have a good communication with student as he was a Patient with me and repeat the problems many time for me to understand and solve any hard problems in easiest way.
I did my Exam well and I did not found any difficulty with problems, and I am willing to get a good mark on my Exams because I did study hard and Dr.David was helping me in my weakness of my study.

David helped my daughter with understanding concepts from Y11 Mathematics - Geometry, Equations & Graphs. Although my daughter has only had 3 sessions with David, it was hugely beneficial for her in preparation for NCEAL1 exam. David has a patient, calming, methodical and logical approach with a unique skill in being able to break down the steps to make complex problems seem quite simple to tackle. He was able to support, guide and 'teach' my daughter in a way that made it easier for her to understand through positive reinforcement and clear explanations. This has made her feel more confident in a subject that has been a struggle. David has the ability to share his knowledge in a way that makes it easier for the learner to understand ... it all started to click into place!! Despite our limited tuition time together, I am confident that we will continue with the tuition next year (Y12 Mathematics) and I fully recommend David as a 1:1 tutor. Fa'afetai tele lava Tavita (Thanks very much Dave!)

I have just completed my first year of my Bachelor of Science, majoring in biomedical science. This year I undertook Physics 160 with the help of David. We had five meetings which I found very beneficial. If I ever have to take Physics again I would definitely seek out his help again. He is pleasant, helpful and explains concepts well.

I am a mature student returning to uni for a career change from IT to Vet/Natural Sciences. I haven't done Physics for over 24 years so really needed help grasping concepts and working through problems. I did an intro Summer school paper and met with David 4 or 5 times, and am pleased to report I got an A+ for my paper!

David is kind and methodical and breaks down concepts into more maneagable bites. He allows you to go at your own pace and is quick to spot what the missing gaps might be. I will definitely be using David again for my current Physics paper, he is very helpful plus value for money.

David has been tutoring me in Cambridge Physics AS and A level for 5 weeks now. He has comprehensive knowledge of the syllabus and is able to frame difficult concepts in a way I can understand. I will continue to hire David as my tutor for other subjects as well for the rest of the year. I highly recommend David to anyone wishing to find an exceptional tutor who can explain difficult concepts in a patient and friendly manner.

I am currently a student at Massey university, doing Physics 124.111 as one of my electives.

I have had 3 sessions with David so far, and the experience has been quite positive.

David has a good understanding of topics covered in this paper and is able to explain the concepts in a way that make them accessible.

He is also very patient as a tutor

I highly recommend him.

I have been getting tutoring from David now for 4 sessions and I am very happy with how it is coming along. David is able to walk me slowly through problems and help me at my pace which is important as I have missed a few years of maths at high school. I am at Auckland Uni now and doing Maths 102 which I was finding quite hard, Although with Davids continued help I am confident I will pass with the results I want. I recommend him as a tutor.

Tutor:Michael Tsai
Rating:rating (What's this?)
Gender:Male
Location:Auckland - Auckland City
Price Range:$50 or higher per hour
Education Level:Graduate/Master Degree
Institute:University of Auckland
Major:Biomedical sciences
Subject:BiologyLevel:All levels
Subject:EnglishLevel:Secondary(Form 3-5)
Subject:UMAT/Med InterviewLevel:All levels
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught 500+ students while successfully assisting over 200 students into 2nd year medicine degrees within Australasia (predominantly in Auckland and Otago).

I am experienced in teaching English, Biology and the general sciences in the secondary level and have a variety of resources to cater for the needs of each student. Back in the secondary level, I undertook the CIE (cambridge international examinations) and gained exceptional grades and won the English prize for my overall year group.

I have students attempting the NCEA, IB and CIE systems and thus understands the necessary requirements needed to excel in the respective courses. Our students range from as early as year 9 to as advanced as first year biomedical students aiming to become medical students in the following year for medicine. For first year biomedical students, we offer comprehensive and detailed sessions that allow the students to completely understand and advance beyond the mainstream progress. As biomedical science is my major, we understand where emphasis should be put with each paper making life just that bit easier and less stressful.

I am currently tutoring students for Biosci 107, Biosci 101, Chem 110 and Population Health 111, Medsci 142 here at the University of Auckland.

I have the means to go in depth with the course material and focus on the important aspects, which may not be so obvious to the mainstream. Extensive UMAT and Interview preparation can also be provided through me if interested as we have many notes and researched on the topics very thoroughly and am currently applying them to our students.

I also hold a Graduate Diploma in adult learning which allows me to not only design learning courses, reflect upon student learning styles, and be flexible in applying various teaching methodologies for student needs but also allows me to critique on the fundamental effectiveness of education delivery at schools and universities.

I am also a mentor of the MATES (Mentoring and Tutoring Education Scheme) programme at the university of Auckland. MATES works with Year 12-13 students identified by their schools as 'having the potential to succeed in tertiary education'. Through a combination of mentoring and tutoring, MATES aims to encourage academic achievement, raise aspirations and enhance self-confidence.

The most enjoyable thing about tutoring or mentoring is finding a student who has the heart to learn and is always wanting more than what I give. That way not only will we be able to connect in the subject and look forward to each session, but also excel above the rest.
Description:
I have finished studying the biomedical sciences degree at the University of Auckland and am currently continuing with the postgraduate studies in the field of adult learning and aim to commence a PhD in the subject in upcoming years. I graduated from Auckland Grammar School in year 2005. I have been living in New Zealand for 18 years now and am also bilingual with Mandarin being my other language.

The location for tutoring is on Anzac Avenue, Auckland CBD in our official premise that is set up for professional teaching environment.

The general tutoring style I prefer is on 1 on 1. However, a group up to 3 people is fine as well. I tend to tutor in a step by step systematic approach to allow the student to gather information easily in a tidy/easily presented manner. I also question and discuss topics with the student for confirmation of their understand and is open for listening to potential issues. I am a relatively open person and can adapt to the individual needs/styles of students as I understand the pressures of study and achieving in school. Thanks for reading.

Michael tutors me in IB(International Baccularate) HL chemistry. He is a great tutor and tutors chemistry in an easy-to-understand way, and uses real life examples. He makes hard concepts a lot easier to understand and diffinately makes chemistry a lot less boring.
I would reccomend Michael as a tutor to anyone who needs tutoring in Chemistry.

Micheal is a fantastic tutor. I have a tutoring session with him roundabout twice a month and my grades are becoming so much better. He makes sure that his students understand the things that he teaches and the answers that he gives to his students when question was asked. I am 6th form at school and I strongly recommend to the any students and especially for the 7 formers who wish to get a good grades and go to the uni that they want.

Just a few comments on this great persons ability.
His tutoring is on another level. His systematic, fun and fully prepeared techniques are signature to himself..The most thing i enjoy about Micheal is his friendliness towards all students.Im first year in Science at the University of Auckland and take most of the core biomedical science papers. He has helped me significantly to get through all my papers .As well as a superb tutor,Micheal builds strong friendship between his students so learning is much more fun!!!!

Cheers boss for all your work and look forward to your future tutorial sessions.

Michael is a very good tutor he has helped me get all my A+ at uni, if it were not for him i would probably have failed thanks!

[By Kieran Chong]created: 30 Jun 2010
In 2008 I completed my first year studying Biomed at Auckland University. As expected it was no walk in the park and I don’t think I have ever studied as much as I did that year. I managed to achieve all A grade marks. Reflecting on my first year at uni I would have to say part of my success was thanks to Michael.

Two papers that I found Michael a great help for were Biosci107 and Medsci142, which are two of the core papers. The weekly tutorials he held were well organised and in a relaxed and friendly environment. The topics covered in each tutorial were in sufficient depth for the exams and sometimes more. We were given well prepared notes to take away with us which was definitely an asset when it came down to test/exam studying. The tutorials were also a great opportunity to ask questions on concepts that I was finding difficult. Because Michael is a student himself, I found it much easier to approach him and ask for help rather than trying to make an appointment with the lecturers.

Both 107 and 142 had a huge amount of content to learn and it was a lot easier to manage with Michael’s advice on which areas to focus on more specifically. As we went through each topic he would tell us what areas he thought we were more likely to get tested on, and more often than not he was right. Having tips like this was a major advantage going into the exams for me – very handy considering first year biomed is so competitive.

Michael is an extremely competent tutor. He has a broad understanding of his topics and is able to communicate well. His lessons are well prepared, contain a good amount of content, and his methods of teaching are very effective. I would definitely recommend him as a tutor.

My teaching attribute is paying "Individual attention to each student" as all students are not upto the same level and don't have same learning pace.Everyone is lagging behind somewhere ,so I pickup the weak areas of the student and guide him particularly at those points. My capability to build connect with students and mentor them has shaped me into an excellent teacher.

Marina is a fantastic tutor. She provided help at a pace that suited me perfectly. She is easy to understand and patient with mistakes, which is all part of the learning process. She helped me a great deal with Italian at a university level, I managed to get an A. So I recommend her as a tutor.

I think that Marina is an awesome tutor. The lessons that she provides are always of a high standard. The lessons are always enjoyable. Marina explains the difficult concepts, in a way that is easy to understand. She is very patient when I make a mistake, and always tries to do her best, so I can learn even more about the Russian language. At times, Marina has gone above and beyond, to make learning fun. I would strongly reccomend, Marina to anyone wishing to learn the Russian language.

Louis really is a French language tutor par excellence!

I have used his services in a series of ten sessions, to brush up my conversational French before travelling to France. I truly could not have made a better choice for that purpose.

He has been clear and easy to understand, ready to restate and rephrase if his student has been slow to comprehend! Louis has proved knowledgeable and flexible in covering a wide range of topics, in an ambiance of good humour and bonhomie.

He is always punctual and happy to linger to continue conversation when the hour is over.

I've been particularly impressed by his conscientious and comprehensive preparation and follow-up, which have added greatly to the value of his sessions.

I give Louis my highest possible recommendation. I'm certain that anyone engaging him would benefit immensely from his excellent tuition.
